From 1 January 2025, the gross national minimum wage (for a standard full-time schedule) is set at RON 4,050 per month.
For the construction sector, a higher minimum gross base salary is set at RON 4,582 per month (average hourly ~ RON 27.71) as of 2025.
For the agricultural and food industries, the gross minimum is aligned at RON 4,050 per month (average hourly ~ RON 24.50) starting 2025.
Payroll & Minimum Wage
Payroll payment: Employers must pay employees at least once a month (as agreed in the employment contract). Wages must be in Romanian Lei (RON).
Overtime compensation: Employees working overtime are entitled to additional benefits/compensation (premium pay or compensatory time off) as per the Labour Code.
Working Hours
The standard full-time work week is 40 hours, typically divided into five 8-hour days.
Overtime work means hours above the standard 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week.
The legal maximum number of working hours (including overtime) is 48 hours per week, averaged over a reference period (usually 4 months).
For employees under 18 years old: work is limited to 30 hours per week, and overtime is prohibited.
Rest breaks:
A rest period of at least 12 consecutive hours between two working days must be ensured. If the daily working time exceeds six hours, the employee is entitled to a meal break (typically 30 minutes or more).
